Jakarta – Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas emphasized that the press plays a strategic role in safeguarding democracy and monitoring the government. He views the media not just as a messenger, but as a vital system of checks and balances to prevent the abuse of state power.
“To the Ministry of Law, the press is more than just a bridge to the public; it is an asset and a pillar of democracy. Without the oversight of the press, the state could act arbitrarily,” the Minister stated during a gathering and Iftar with media Editors-in-Chief at the Ministry office on Tuesday (03/03/2026).
Supratman noted that the government needs the press to be a watchdog rather than a mere mouthpiece for its policies. The media is expected to hold policymakers accountable, ensuring decisions remain aligned with public interests and national goals.
“We hope the media serves as a control mechanism for policymakers, so that every decision stays true to our national ideals,” Supratman said.
Representing the media, Retno Pinasti praised the Minister’s openness toward the press community. She noted that Supratman maintains regular communication, rather than only reaching out when the Ministry faces major scandals or viral issues.
“The Minister is one of the most accessible officials for discussion. This is a routine effort, not just a reaction to a crisis or a viral case,” said the Editor-in-Chief of SCTV-Indosiar.
Retno added a lighthearted note, mentioning that according to AI platforms, the Ministry’s most "viral" performance remains the naturalization of football players.
“If you ask ChatGPT about the Ministry’s most viral work, it still points to the naturalization of football players,” she remarked.
This Iftar gathering is part of the Ministry’s routine engagement with the media. The event was attended by 37 editors-in-chief and journalists from various online, print, and electronic outlets.
